Divided in covert cells across Italy, the Carbonari were an Italian secret society active between 1800 and 1831. Inspired by Enlightenment beliefs and the French Revolution, its members advocated for representational and Constitutional governments. Their main goal was to reduce foreign influence in the Italian Kingdoms and Papal states. They were the main source of opposition to conservative regimes that were imposed on Italy by the victorious allies after they defeated Napoleon in 1815. However, even with this main goal in main goal in mind, there was never a single program: some members favored a republic, others wanted a limited monarchy; some wanted a federation, while others wanted a unitary Italian State. As they get together and plan the future of Italy, what path will they take? Will they rise above the power of conservative Europe, or will their society be crushed? Only time will reveal the truth...
